Academic / Research Position in Geology



Job Description: The Department of Geological Sciences at the Universidad Católica del Norte (UCN) announces a position of academic / research in geology. We are interested in candidates who are able to combine both teaching (undergraduate / postgraduate) and research, especially in areas associated to economic geology. The applicant must demonstrate ability to produce ISI publications and potential award of CONICYT projects and other sources of funding, according to their level of experience.  It is highly desirable to collaborate with other colleagues within the department, as well as of the University and researchers from other universities and / or research centers.

 


Department of Geological Sciences: The Department of Geological Sciences consists of 17 full-time academics and 2 postdoc, and work areas include: stratigraphy, paleontology, geomorphology, structural geology, tectonics, mineral deposits, economic geology, hydrogeology, seismology, geochemistry, igneous processes, volcanology and geothermal energy. The Department offers the qualifications of Degree of Bachelor of Science in Geological Sciences, Qualified Professional Geologist, and the degrees of Master of Economic Geology (Mining and Exploration) and Master of Geometallurgy, as well as the degree of Doctor of Science (Geology). During 2017 a new Masters of Geology will also be implemented. In addition, the Department is involved with diverse large scale projects incorporating applied research, teaching projects and collaboration with private enterprise, which number over a dozen in the last 3 years. The Department has an infrastructure to support teaching and research, including the following laboratories: seismology, geochemistry (with analytical equipment including AAS, ICP-AES, XRD and XRF), paleomagnetism, SEM-EDX, microthermometry fluid inclusions, clay separation, and Terraspec, and a sample preparation workshop. In addition, it is possible to collaborate with other research units at UCN where there is access to other equipment such as QEMSCAN®.

UCN and the city of Antofagasta: Universidad Catolica del Norte is 60 years old, belonging to the council of rectors, and is considered the best and largest of northern Chile, with more than 11,000 students enrolled, with 9 doctoral programs and 14 master's programs.  Antofagasta, the city in which the Department of Geological Sciences is located, is a coastal city and the largest in northern Chile, with a population of nearly 350 thousand inhabitants. The city is nestled in the Atacama Desert, with a normal desert climate, low rainfall, and pleasant temperatures ranging on average between 18 and 25° C all year, which is ideal for sporting and outdoor activities. Antofagasta is the mining center of the country, and is the hub for the largest Cu metallogenic province in the world. Other important economic activities in the region include energy, trade, and fishing. In addition, Antofagasta is surrounded by great tourist destinations such as “La Portada de Antofagasta”, the beaches of Juan Lopez and Hornitos, and is close to historical sites such as the more than 50 ruins of saltpeter mining offices, as well as precordillera towns (San Pedro de Atacama, Toconao, among others), and countless interesting geological sites, such as salt lakes, volcanoes, and various morphologies associated with the desert.

Requirements: The applicant must have the degree of Doctor at the time of application, demonstrate experience and capability of publication in ISI rated journals, ability for application for research projects, teaching abilities at all university levels, as well as been able to develop collaborations with other members of the Department and other academic and research units at UCN.

Type of contract, wages and benefits: The initial contract is a full time fixed term (2 years) position, which is subjected to an evaluation at the end of this period by the Council of the Department of Geological Sciences, to determine the indefinite continuity of the candidate based on their performance.  Compensation will be based on the UCN pay scale according to the candidate’s experience.  In addition, the University has incentive payments for scientific publications (bonus per ISI publication), and various other benefits associated with the Welfare Department of the University, which mainly include social and health benefits.
