Dear Colleagues,

We would like to bring to your attention that we still have some places for Workshop W3 Understanding communication products and protocols: Volcano alert level system at the Cities on Volcanoes 9 Conference this November http://www.citiesonvolcanoes9.com

We invite those interested in the topic to attend the workshop including:
  • interested in implementing or reviewing your observatory volcano alert level system and communication products and protocols
  • volcano observatory staff
  • users of the communication products e.g. civil protection / emergency management, aviation, land managers etc.
  • academic interested in the communication of volcanic hazards and risks.

Details of the workshop: 1.5 days. Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th (morning only).

Aim of the workshop:
The aim of this workshop is to focus on the Volcano alert level systems (VALS) and communication products and protocols used at various volcano observatories around the world to communicate to various user groups and vulnerable populations. Representatives from observatories are invited to present their existing VALS and communication procedures, and describe how it was developed, and why. As part of the workshop, a simulation exercise using a VALS will be run and the challenges and benefits of VALS will be discussed. Aspects for the working group to investigate further will be identified, and a plan made for future workshops and potentially new collaborative research.

This workshop, organized by the Volcano Alert Level Working group (within WOVO), invites all stakeholders working within VALS to share their knowledge, experience and potential barriers. It is intended to establish best practices so that all practitioners can benefit, particularly those who are devising new systems, or accommodating newly standardized one.

Registration fees will cover workshop participation - for more information please see: https://www.citiesonvolcanoes9.com/en/program/scientific-technical-program/workshops/

We look forward to seeing you in Chile!

Kind regards,

Annie Winson
