Smartphone apps, push notifications and emergency warnings

Hi folks,

We are working on an update of a review of New Zealand public alerting options. In New Zealand a wide range of alerts, especially weather, tsunami and volcanic eruption warnings, all need to be accommodated.

The main goals are to update the options reviewed (over 20), their costs, pros and cons, and focus on inclusion of new options - highlighting the emergence of smartphone apps and social media delivery.

We are having difficultly finding any research evidence published around emergency alerting/warning apps on smartphones, possibly because it's a relatively new option. There is research to refer to in relation to many other telco options including SMS, Cell Broadcast, autodialers, pagers etc..

REQUEST: We'd very much appreciate if you could pass on any research (or key experiences) you are aware of around smartphones or apps as applicable to emergency warnings that should be included in the New Zealand review.

All the best,
Graham
