The 3rd edition of VOLCANOES' NIGHT will bring again the researchers closer to the public at large, allowing for direct exchanges, meetings and interactive activities. VOLCANOES' NIGHT will give the public and in particular young people, the opportunity to meet researchers within the context of festive and ‘fun’ activities and to highlight the appeal of pursuing a research career.
The third edition of VOLCANOES' NIGHT will take place seven different municipalities of Canary islands (Spain): Fuencaliente (La Palma Island), Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife Island), La Fontera (El Hierro Island), Yaiza (Lanzarote Island), Ingenio (Gran Canaria Island), Hermigua (Gomera Island) and Pájara (Fuerteventura Island); and at Iberian Peninsula: Calatrava (Ciudad Real) - on Friday 26th September 2014, and will be the next occasion for a wide public and media event for the promotion of volcano research careers.
The third edition of VOLCANOES' NIGHT is part of the Researchers' Night; an event established by the European Union to be celebrated all over Europe which main objective consists of bringing the researchers closer to the public at large, allowing for direct exchanges, meetings and interactive activities. It gives the public and in particular young people, the opportunity to meet researchers within the context of festive and ‘fun’ activities and to highlight the appeal of pursuing a research career. The Researchers' Night is organized under the Specific Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions within the 7th Framework Programmers for Research and Technological Development.
Among the activities that will take place in this third edition, we present the FIRST PHOTO CONTEST of VOLCANOES' NIGHT. All those over 18 who are willing and have digital camera may participate, establishing two contest categories:
1) VOLCANOTOURISM. This category will offer the public the opportunity to express their creativity and vision of one of the benefits of the volcanic phenomenon; TOURISM, contributing to the advancement of knowledge about volcanoes.
2) THE WORK OF A VOLCANOLOGIST. This category is intended that the contestants take pictures of the work of volcanologists in their work environment.
Contest rules
1. The contest is open to anyone over 18 years old, and no professional of photography. Employees and relatives ITER - INVOLCAN - LA PALMA RESEARCH CENTRE FOR FUTURE STUDIES cannot participate in this contest.
2. Each participant may submit a single photograph.
3. Photographs taken by persons other than the author will not be accepted.
4. Photographs contrary to the right to honor, personal and family privacy will not be published and accepted for the contest. Any file contrary to the law will not be accepted.
5. Photographs cannot be altered electronically or by any other means. Photo montages are not accepted. Minimum brightness and color corrections are permitted.
6. Previously published photographs in any professional support, included electronic, will not be accepted, with the exception of social networks for personal use. If the photo is part of a series, this rule applies to all images that belong to the same series.
7. Photographs that have been previously awarded will not be accepted.
8. Participant declares and warrants to the organization that is the sole owner of all copyright of the photograph submitted to the contest and fully responsible that no third party rights in the works presented, as well as any claim of third for parties for image rights.
9. Photographs must be JPEG files with maximum resolution allowed by the camera and minimum size of 1,600 x 1,200 pixels. Photos must be landscape-oriented.
10. Participants who do not meet any of the requirements listed in this announcement will be disqualified automatically.
Sending photographs and deadlines
Participants must submit their photograph to the following email:

before 12:00 h (UTC/GMT) of September 15, 2014, identifying full name, phone number, title of photograph and chosen category. The photos received after this date and time will not be accepted.
Exhibition of photographs
1. The participant agrees that his picture is displayed during the FIRST PHOTO CONTEST of VOLCANOES' NIGHT (September 26, 2014) as well as on social channels (web and Facebook).
2. The organization will print out the winning photographs for further exposure. The winning works will be in possession of the Organization. After one month of that date, it is considered that the author claims no ownership of them in favor of the Organization of VOLCANOES' NIGHT 2014, which may be destined to what it considers most appropriate.
Jury and jury’s decision
1. The Jury of the FIRST PHOTO CONTEST of VOLCANOES' NIGHT will be established by the Organization. The evaluation criteria of the jury will be creativity and photographic quality. The selection of winners will be at the sole decision of the jury and its decision shall be final and unappeasable.
2. On September 23, 2014, the names of the winners will be announced on the website www.nochedevolcanes.es. If the jury considers that presented works have not sufficient quality, awards could be declared void.
Awards
Awards are as follows:
VOLCANOTURISM Category:
1 - First prize: 200.00 € and a diploma.
2 - Second prize: 100.00 € and a diploma.
3 - Third prize: 50.00 € and a diploma.
WORK of a VOLCANOLOGIST Category:
1 - First prize: 200.00 € and a diploma.
2 - Second prize: 100.00 € and a diploma.
3 - Third prize: 50.00 € and a diploma.
Photographs may be used to prepare the 2016 calendar published every year on the benefit of INVOLCAN’s educational program “Canary Islands: a volcanic window in the Atlantic". The organization of "VOLCANOES' NIGHT" will reserve the right of publication and/or reproduction of the winning photographs, by itself or through third parties, without limitation of time or place, in any case citing the author's name.
The awards will be presented to the winners during the celebration of "VOLCANOES' NIGHT " or bank transfer if they cannot attend the delivery at some of the venues of the event.
Use of Winners Name for Publicity and Data Protection
Sending pictures imply that the organization of the FIRST PHOTO CONTEST of VOLCANOES' NIGHT will ask for express consent for the purposes of access to their personal data and treat them in order to publish the result of the promotion, using thus their name and likeness, without such use conferred a right of remuneration or benefit. Enrollment by participants in the FIRST PHOTO CONTEST of VOLCANOES' NIGHT implies acceptance of these rules, leaving the organization empowered to resolve any issues arising in the development.
