Dear colleagues,

we'd like to draw your attention to the following AGU Fall Meeting session:

V039: The geochemical diversity of the mantle inferred from hotspots: Five decades of debate (session ID#: 1496)
Session Description:
Lavas erupted at hotspots are critial probes of the geochemical composition of the mantle.  Gast, Tilton and Hedge [Science, 1964] discovered that Sr and Pb isotopes are heterogeneous in oceanic lavas, and this pioneering work heralded an explosion in studies to understand how the mantle came to be heterogeneous. We now have considerably larger geochemical datasets, but the origin of the diverse geochemical mantle components remains the subject of debate.  Some mantle components appear to be a result of recycling of subducted surface materials, while exotic metasomatic processes may also generate the diverse array of mantle species.

We encourage submissions that help develop a better understanding of mantle geochemical diversity as sampled by hotspot volcanism and continue in the spirit of the early pioneers of mantle geochemistry. It is only through interdisciplinary collaboration that the field will be advanced.  We encourage submissions from geochemists, geophysicists and geodynamicists alike.
