The Surtsey at 50 Years Scientific Drilling Project announces an inter-disciplinary workshop that will focus on the science issues and logistics central to a comprehensive drilling program through the 200 m sequence of basaltic deposits erupted in 1963–1967 from Surtsey volcano in the Vestmannaeyar Islands of southeastern Iceland.

Surtsey volcano represents a world-class example of island formation through rift zone volcanism. The preliminary scientific plan is to core the volcanic edifice above and below sea level to study how diagenetic and biogenetic hydrothermal seawater-basaltic glass interactions have evolved since drilling in 1979 at ~25–140 °C; describe how rift zone volcanic islands form, lithify, and are ultimately destroyed; explore how explosive magma interacts with seawater; and develop analog studies with ancient Roman seawater concrete to provide a new foundation for sustainable, specialty concretes for maritime environments. The workshop will include participants from a variety of disciplines, who will develop the rationale and scientific basis for a formal drilling proposal, plan site selection and site selection criteria, and outline proposals for submission to various funding entities, including NSF and ICDP in 2015.

We invite participants from all countries, with preference given to those that are members of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program. Interested researchers are invited to submit a brief summary of their field of research, describing their intended contribution to this international scientific project. Researchers will be invited to the workshop on the basis of their research summary as well the project’s disciplinary focus and we will attempt to cover participation expenses from ICDP funds.

The workshop will be held at the Hotel Vestmannaeyar Conference Center on Heimaey Island, September 30-October 4, 2014. The workshop will include a field trip to hyaloclastite deposits on Heimaey Island, posters on current work, and an optional boat trip around Surtsey. For more information and an application form in pdf format, visit our website at http://geology.ucdavis.edu/meetings/ICDP_Surtsey2014.pdf . Interested parties should submit an application form with their names, contact information, and research interests to Marie Jackson at mdjackson@xxxxxxxxxxxx, with Surtsey at 50 Years in the subject line, or upload to the website.
