Institute of Earth Sciences (IES), University of Iceland seeks applicants to fill a tenure-track position of research specialist in the area geology or geophysics. Field of expertise and experience is required in one of the following fields: paleomagnetic measurements and the magnetic field of the Earth, buildup of lava pile and shallow crust, and geochronology.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in geology, geophysics or related subjects. The successful applicant must have a strong research background in one or more of the above-mentioned fields. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required. According to the regulations of the University, at the start of employment the Rector may grant promotion to qualified candidates, to the level of Research Scholar or Research Scientist.  This is a tenure-track position with an initial appointment of five years.

Iceland and the surrounding shelf is shaped by repeated eruptions that have built up Iceland’s lava pile and shallow crust. The Institute of Earth Sciences has carried out research on the lava pile by paleomagnetic measurements, resulting in a unique data set and results.  There is interest in continuing research in this and related fields, and increase them as opportunities arise. In order to understand better the processes that have governed the build up of the Iceland lava pile and surrounding shelf, then the IES seeks applicants with expertise and experience in one of the fields mentioned above, with the purpose of increasing the understanding of the Iceland region.
