GSA 2014. T187: Geothermal Energy in Northwestern North America

Dear Volcanophiles,
I’d like to let you know about a special session at the Geological Society of America national conference in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, October 19-22, 2014. “Recent Advances in the Exploration, Characterization, and Development of Geothermal Resources in the Pacific Northwest” hopes to attract presenters from around the world that have been involved in or would like to share insights into historically underutilized geothermal resources between Oregon and Alaska. Topics may range from site-specific characterization to techniques for overcoming development hurdles impacting the region as a whole. Abstracts are due by July 29, 2014.
Geothermal power in the Pacific Northwest, including the states of Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Alaska and the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta, may be at an important transition. Commercialization of geothermal resources throughout the region remains rare: as of this writing there are only 3 operating geothermal power plants between southern Oregon and Alaska, with less than 35 MW of installed generating capacity between them. However, the application of new technology and new exploration techniques over the past few years has resulted in significant progress towards expanding geothermal power generation in Pacific states and provinces. Now, new hydrothermal and engineered geothermal projects are underway in Oregon. Geothermal permitting and exploration drilling has recently occurred in Washington. Numerous hydrothermal and co-generation projects are being evaluated in Canada and in Alaska the limits of lower temperature and geographically isolated resources are being tested. Projects currently in the development pipeline may double the installed power generation capacity in this region in the next few years. This session will provide a forum for researchers involved with projects from around the region to share insights into the character and development outcomes of various geothermal plays. It is our hope that cross collaboration will facilitate the discovery and efficient development of additional resources through discussion of specific failures and successes related to recent and ongoing projects from the northwestern states, western provinces, and Alaska.
