Two USGS Volcano Science Center post-docs
************************************************************************************************
The USGS Volcano Science Center in Menlo Park, CA is advertising two post-doc positions (four years term) for work on alkali basalt/trachyte volcanic centers in the Middle East and on volcanic centers in the United States.
Lava Inundation/flow advancement rates
One position will develop and apply methods to predict areas and probabilities of basaltic lava inundation, as well as rates of flow advancement, using high-resolution (0.5-2m) Digital Terrain Models combined with field and analytical information on vent distributions, eruption frequencies and volumes, and magma compositions and properties. Our ideal candidate would combine experience in the field aspects of volcanology and in numerical modeling, but proficiency in one and a willingness to learn the other will be acceptable. The vacancy is described on the USAJOBS website, announcement PAC-2014-0424 (https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/368637600).
Geochronology
The second position will develop a time/volume eruptive history for an alkali basalt/trachyte center. The incumbent will conduct fieldwork, collect appropriate geochronology samples, and work in the laboratory to determine eruption and exposure ages for young volcanic rocks. Argon geochronology will be the main technique, but the post-doc will also acquire and/or measure cosmogenic exposure ages for non-eroded lava flows. Intercalibration of cosmogenic and radiometric dating will be a significant component of the work. This position is described in announcement PAC-2014-0437 (https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/368637500).
Success publishing in the peer-reviewed scientific literature will factor strongly in the selection process. Both positions are GS12, which for the San Francisco Bay Area has a starting salary of about $US82k annually (before taxes). Government hiring regulations restrict the positions to U.S. citizens. Both positions are open for application now and will remain open for three weeks (30 April - 20 May).
