DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY
Summer Field Camp Part-time Instructor  Summer 2014

The Geology Department at California State University, Sacramento invites applications for a short term faculty position at the Instructor level, for approximately 5 weeks during May-June 2014.  Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in geology or be close to finishing their degree.

Assignment:
The position is to co-instruct the CSU Sacramento Geology Field Camp (Geology 188).  The position is one of field instructor and does not include the general planning and logistics of the camp.
Other duties include:
To accompany and assist the primary professor in all field excursions and lectures;
To assists primary professor in grading reports and maps;
To assist students in the field with geologic and non-geologic needs;
To function as official driver for all field and non-field outings;
To assist in pre-field preparation for field and academic readiness (eg., non-field exercises, equipment, vehicles).

Requirements for the position include:
-Strong field mapping skills and experience using topographic base maps and air photos.
-Solid emotional and leadership qualities;
-Good interpersonal communication skills;
-Excellent technical writing skills;
-Good physical fitness;
-Can-do attitude;
-Enthusiasm and a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring;
-Proficiency in structural, tectonic, igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary geology;
-Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

"Optional but desirable" qualifications include:
-GPS skills;
-GIS (ArcMap) skills;
-Ability to drive 4WD vehicle on rugged roads;
-Medical first-aid training;

Wage
5 units of teaching (at $1725/unit, total of $8625 for the course; rate will vary depending on experience and academic degree held). Transportation, lodging and board included while in the field (away from Sacramento).

Schedule
May 27 - June 1, 2014: Lab exercises at CSU Campus in Sacramento.
June 2 - June 30, 2014: Field work in eastern CA and NV; Sacramento (dates are tentative)

(3) several examples of the applicant's geologic maps, cross sections, stratigraphic sections and unpublished or published field reports (email digital scans of these);
