PhD position, Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology:
"Geological and volcanological applications of Fourier-transform imaging spectrometers"

Hi.

I am looking for a graduate student (PhD) to work on a project investigating the geological/volcanological applications of Fourier-transform imaging spectrometers, for long-wave infrared remote sensing. The student’s research will be part of a wider instrument development project. While that instrument will not be ready for flight for another two years, we have several other (similar) instruments on the shelf that the student will use to determine (in the lab, the field, and from the air), how this imaging technique can be used, for example, to discriminate the mineralogy/lithology of solid surfaces, and the composition of volcanic  gas plumes. The student will also play a role in the development and flight testing of the new instrument. The position will start in Fall 2014. The project will be well suited to someone with a background in physical sciences, geophysics, or geology. Experience in analyzing spectra extracted from image data (e.g. in IDL or MatLab) will be distinctly useful.

Please send a full cv (the usual stuff required for a grad school application, with contact details for referees, and any questions) to wright@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

In order to ensure a Fall 2014 start, review of applications will need to begin immediately.

Thanks, Robert Wright.
