5th International Maar Conference. Monogenetic volcanism and mineral resources, quarries, land management, and geotourism

The Fifth International Maar Conference will be held in Querétaro, México, 17-22 November, 2014.

Mexico is a natural laboratory where volcanism of different ages and tectonic settings is widely exposed. The 5th International Maar Conference will focus on both maar-type volcanoes and other types of volcanoes in the monogenetic fields. Sessions related to architecture and evolution of the volcanoes, their structural and tectonic settings, hazards related to monogenetic activity, environmental studies, economic and cultural aspects, analog experiments, and modeling will be held during the conference.  Field trips will occur before, during, and after the conference.  More information can be found at http://maar2014.geociencias.unam.mx.

We would particularly like to call your attention to the session described below.  Other sessions can be viewed at the home page given above.

Session 5. Monogenetic volcanism and mineral resources, quarries, land management, and geotourism

Conveners:
Michael Ort (michael.ort@xxxxxxx)
Bruce Kjarsgaard (bkjarsga@xxxxxxxxxxx)
Peter Bitschene (Bitschene@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)

Monogenetic volcanism provides the materials and landforms that scientists use to explore the volcanology and geochemistry of the Earth’s interior. In addition to these scientific and, at times, theoretical studies, monogenetic volcanism also provides numerous economic benefits. Contributions are welcomed that focus on the diverse utilization of monogenetic volcanic fields, including beneficial use of mineral, rocks and water resources, landscape preservation (and degradation), geotourism and geoparks. A complementary topic to the latter is the value of rocks and volcanoes for education and entertainment. This session will highlight economic and social aspects of monogenetic volcanism and thus help bridge the gap between science and society.
