Volcanic Crisis Awareness for Scholars

As part of our college-level initiative we are teaching a 1.5-day short course entitled Volcano Crises Awareness course in Buffalo on February 19-20. This delivery is co-sponsored by the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center at University of Hawaii, and the Center for Geohazard Studies at the University at Buffalo. The scope is to introduce all aspects of volcanic crises (i.e. not just physical volcanology): the hazards, vulnerabilities, impacts and risks, and the tools and processes that support monitoring, forecasts, warnings, preparedness, mitigation, and response. Brief notes are on-line at:

This course was developed in 2012 by NDPTC and the Volcano Hazards Program of U.S.G.S., initially for an audience of emergency managers, and response officials. In 2014 we are independently delivering the course to a wider college-based market.

The structure is basically 6 one-hour taught modules followed by a 4 hour-scenario.

·         THE VOLCANO PROBLEM

•     HAZARDS AND IMPACTS

•     YOU AND YOUR VOLCANOES

•     THE PULSE OF THE VOLCANO (monitoring and science response)

•     CASE STUDIES OF CRISIS EVENTS (10 choices to pick 4 studies from)

•     AWARENESS AND PREPAREDNESS (Human behavior during volcanic crises)

In the scenario the participants are divided into groups playing different decision- making or –implementing roles, i.e., the eruption is set-in-stone but the human consequences are decided by their actions.
