Dear colleagues,
We would like to draw your attention to the following session to be held at the
Cities on Volcanoes 8 meeting in Yogyakarta, Indonesia (9 - 13 Sept 2014):
"Volcanic Lakes and Their Impact on Human
and Natural Environments"
in Monitoring volcanoes - Wet Volcanoes(1.IV.A)
Convenors: Corentin Caudron (EOS, Singapore), Dmitri Rouwet (INGV Bologna, Italy) and Sri Sumarti (CVGHM, Indonesia)
The
presence of a lake in a volcano crater increases the probability of the
occurrence of specific hazardous events. Volcanic lakes can affect the
surrounding areas in direct or indirect ways. Direct hazards are e.g.
phreatic or phreatomagmatic eruptions, lahars triggered by lake overflow
or Nyos-type limnic gas bursts. On the other
hand, indirect hazards include the infiltration of acidic fluids into
the volcanic edifice, leading to dispersion of contaminants into the
hydrologic network and soils, eventually leading to decrease the
mechanical stability of volcano flanks after prolonged
“acid attack” from seeping acid lakes. This session is open to any
discipline (from geophysics to geochemistry, to biology, limnology,
agricultural and environmental approaches) aiming to better understand
the impact volcanic lakes on the surrounding areas:
crater lake monitoring, impact on the natural and human environment,
risk and hazard mitigation strategies, deterministic and probabilistic
hazard forecasting, volcanic lakes as touristic spots,
multi-disciplinary research approaches, social volcanology,…
The scope of the session is to focus on how volcanic lakes can affect
human activities.
The abstract submission deadline is Monday, April 14, 2014. Full details can be found on http://www.citiesonvolcanoes8.com.
