Mitigating Economic and Insurance Losses from Volcanic Eruptions
Convenors: Christopher Kilburn, Stephen Edwards and Grant Heiken, University College London, UK (c.kilburn@xxxxxxxxx)

The world economy is becoming more vulnerable to volcanic eruptions each year. Population growth and development are increasing the numbers of people and assets located in volcanic districts, while the global expansion of commercial activities means that the economic repercussions of eruptions may be felt across the world. This session will consider how the hitherto unrealised opportunity of co-operation between the academic, business and governmental sectors can improve the understanding, assessment and, through insurance, the mitigation of economic loss from volcanic activity. Especially welcome will be contributions that highlight successes and failures in existing insurance and economic strategies, that identify specific needs from volcanic risk science, and that raise awareness of the full range of potential economic impacts from volcanic eruptions.

Information on submitting abstracts can be found at: http://citiesonvolcanoes8.com/?page_id=88
Abstracts must be submitted by 14 April 2014
