Dear Colleagues,

We would like to encourage you to submit a contribution to our session in the next EGU General Assembly to be held in Vienna, April 22 – 27, 2012 (for details: http://meetings.copernicus.org/egu2012):
GMPV4.11 “Spatio-temporal evolution of volcanic systems: the importance of geochronology”

Invited Speakers:
Andrew Calvert, USGS, USA
Martine Paterne, LSCE, France
Link: http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2012/session/10033

Please note the abstract submission deadline of January 17th 2012.
Please pass this information on to colleagues and students working in this field.
Age determinations are critical to understand the evolution in space and time of a given volcano, in that they contribute to constrain the timing of eruptive events. By linking geochronology and geochemistry, we can gain an improved understanding of the processes operating all along the history of a given volcano, from source to surface. Integration of ages with geomorphology allow to identify any possible periodicity of volcanic episodes and estimate volcanic output rates and erosion rates, which are important factors to take into account for hazard assessment.
This session aims at bringing together state-of-the-art dating methods (radiogenic isotopes, paleomagnetism, stratigraphy …), spanning scales from mineral to outcrop, to constrain the history of volcanic systems. We invite presentations targeting theory, methodology, recent improvements, range of effectiveness (time, scale), quantitative and qualitative studies, statistics, field and laboratory investigations, new approaches and applications to volcanology (mapping, hazard assessment…).

You may submit the text of your contribution as plain text, LaTeX, or MS Word content. Please pay attention to the First Author Rule as described at: http://meetings.copernicus.org/egu2012/abstract_management/how_to_submit_an_abstract.html

Kind regards,

Aurélie Germa, Ralf Gertisser and Xavier Quidelleur.
