PhD Position at LMU Munich (Germany) in permeability evolution of volcanic systems
From: Bettina Scheu <b.scheu@xxxxxx>

Funding

3 years funding is available from an international EU-project. Funding includes salary based on standard German PhD salary (TVL13/2) as well as costs for research, field work and participation at international summer schools being part of the EU-project.

Project Summary

Permeability decrease during plug formation plays a key role in modulating the ability of the volcanic system to degas and loose volatiles. Changes in permeability may originate either from alteration or densification in a shallow conduit or dome. Within this project both aspects should be investigated. The core of the experiment will be permeability measurements on volcanic rocks with a variety of evolved permeable network structures and varying degrees of alteration. Further the samples will be deformed (densified) at volcanically relevant conditions (up to 1000 °C & 75 MPa) and investigated for changes in permeability. The project also comprises thorough petrologic and textural analysis of samples prior to and after deformation.

Qualifications

Applicants for this PhD project should have a strong background in magmatic petrology and textural analysis as well as a good knowledge in physics and maths. Experience in experimental work, field work and numerical modelling are a plus.

Interested candidates are encouraged to send a motivation letter and a detailed CV to Dr. Bettina Scheu (b.scheu@xxxxxx). Deadline of the application is 19 December 2011.
Further we encourage interested candidates joining AGU Fall Assembly to contact us beforehand to organize a meeting during the conference (alternatively drop a message at the LMU booth).

The project start is planned for spring 2012 (but later starting dates may be considered).
