Age determinations are critical to understand the evolution in space and time of a given volcano, in that they contribute to constrain the timing of eruptive events. By linking geochronology and geochemistry, we can gain an improved understanding of the processes operating all along the history of a given volcano, from source to surface. Integration of ages with geomorphology allow to identify any possible periodicity of volcanic episodes and estimate volcanic output rates and erosion rates, which are important factors to take into account for hazard assessment.
This session aims at bringing together state-of-the-art dating methods (radiogenic isotopes, paleomagnetism, stratigraphy …), spanning scales from mineral to outcrop, to constrain the history of volcanic systems. We invite presentations targeting theory, methodology, recent improvements, range of effectiveness (time, scale), quantitative and qualitative studies, statistics, field and laboratory investigations, new approaches and applications to volcanology (mapping, hazard assessment…).
