Dr. Jonathan Castro is currently seeking candidates for a doctoral research scholarship in volcanology in the Institute of Geosciences at the University of Mainz, Germany.  The project brings 3 years of full support and will entail measuring the volatile component chemistry of several volcanoes in the Ecuadorian Cordillera.  The project will begin with a field component in Ecuador, followed by intensive analysis of volatile-sensitive materials in recent eruptives (e.g., glass inclusions, hydrous minerals and their textures, and phase petrology).  A familiarity with FTIR and EPMA techniques is a plus.

The University of Mainz is a partner in the Geocycles Research Centre (http://www.geocycles.de/eng/index.php), which funds this scholarship and comprises several research teams interested in problems spanning archaeological studies, volcanism, atmospheric chemistry, human cultures, and climate.
Research skills to be gained in the course of PhD work include:  field methods, electron microprobe analysis, conventional and synchrotron-based FTIR, 3D microtextural analysis of crystal and bubble-bearing magma.

A list of analytical facilities available at Mainz can be reviewed here:

The doctoral scholarship is available immediately.  Interested parties should send a brief statement of interest, a CV including 2 references, and a summary of academic coursework to Jonathan Castro at: castroj@xxxxxxxxxxxx
