The Associazione Italiana per la Vulcanologia (AIV) announces the 2011 summer school, to be held in Salina Island (Aeolian Archipelago, southern Italy).

The importance of mid to low intensity esplosive activity at silicic volcanoes in terms of impact and hazard has been increasingly recognized in the last years, especially following several recent volcanic crisis. Conversely, the modalities of magma eruption and dispersal at the surface are still not completely understood, also for the very wide range of eruptive mechanisms involved.
In this framework, we would like to draw your attention to the annual International School of Volcanology proposed by the AIV (Associazione Italiana di Vulcanologia) in collaboration with INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia), with topic

“Mid to low intensity explosive activity at silicic volcanoes:
examples from the Aeolian Islands (southern Italy)”

The school is aimed at providing lectures and field discussions about the dynamics of mid to low intensity explosive eruptions at silicic volcanoes. In particular, attention will be pose to feeding systems (magma chambers vs. magma batches) that fed relatively small volume eruptions, fragmentation processes (magmatic vs. phreatomagmatic), eruptive dynamics (continuous vs. pulsating eruptions) and related deposits. Internationally recognized researchers will give lectures (the list of lectures will be provided in the second circular).

Field activity will comprise excursions in the islands of Salina, Lipari and Vulcano (Aeolian archipelago, southern Italy), which will cover a wide range of intermediate to small volume eruptions fed by rhyolitic to latitic magmas. An optional fieldtrip to the summit craters of Stromboli will be proposed as a post-school excursion.

The school is addressed to graduate and PhD students as well as to post-docs and young researchers in volcanology and will take place from September 24 to 29, 2011 with base on the pleasant island of Salina.

Inscription fee is estimated around 400 Euro (depending on the number of participants), and includes: registration, school material, 5 nights accommodation, breakfast, dinners, internal transports, and the AIV 2012 membership. The optional fieldtrip to Stromboli is not incorporated into the inscription fee.

Important dates:

Second circular, end of May 2011
Early registration, June 30th 2011
Final registration, July 29th 2011

Further details on the scheduled program and travels will be provided in a second circular and made available at the websites www.aivulc.it and www.ingv.it/servizi-e-risorse/convegni
