Modeling the interaction between diking and faulting
The main goal of this project is a better understanding of the dynamics of the interaction between diking and pre-existing or generated faulting.
The expected research activity includes the study of the seismicity induced by fluid-filled fractures, such as magma-filled dikes and hydro-fractures, and numerical models of the graben faulting induced by magma-filled dikes as well as of the interaction between pre-existing (sometimes slow-slipping) major faults and diking.
Detailed description:
Magma-filled propagating dikes and other fluid-filled fractures, such as hydrofractures, induce deformation and change the state of stress in the surrounding rock. This generates seismicity according to spatio-temporal patterns that are mostly unexplained. Dikes interact with external fault systems in a complicated way; examples of this interaction include Etna volcano, where the latest dikes, which intruded in a NS oriented rift, interacted with the EW-oriented Pernicana fault, and Kilauea volcano, where dikes intruding in the rift are associated with slip on a decollement fault at the base of the rift. Mostly these faults slip slowly, but they occasionally caused major earthquakes. Whether it is the dikes reactivating the faults, or viceversa, is not clear, and debated.
This project aims at studying:
- the interaction of slow-slipping faults and propagating dikes
- the correlations between induced seismic events and deformation
- the effects of plastic rheology and layering on the fault-dike interaction.
If more time is available, the project could be extended to look into the interaction of faults with magma chambers or gas-filled reservoirs.
Requirements:
Master (or equivalent degree) in Geophysics, Physics or related area; good mathematical and physical skills, good computer programming skills (Matlab, Fortran). Knowledge in fracture mechanics and physics of volcanic systems will be positively evaluated.
Start between 1/9/2011 and 1/1/2012
