applications and nominations for Dean of the College of Sciences and
Technology (CST).  As chief academic and executive officer of the College, the
Dean reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs and is
responsible for providing academic and administrative leadership for all
programs within the College.  As a key member of the University’s central
executive leadership team, the Dean works in collaboration with other
university executive officers to implement the University’s mission.  The Dean
will assume office on September 1, 2011.

About the College:  Western’s College of Sciences and Technology, which
includes the departments of Biology; Chemistry; Computer Science; Engineering
Technology; Geology; Mathematics; Physics/Astronomy; as well as the Science,
Mathematics and Technology Education (SMATE) program; the Advanced Materials
Science and Engineering Center (AMSEC); Biomedical Research Activities in

grants and other funding.

participate in the discovery, communication and application of knowledge; to
integrate teaching, scholarly activity and service; and to maintain a diverse
college community. The College and Western as a whole are known for providing
a distinctive educational experience through close faculty-student
interaction, emphasizing independent student scholarship and the development
of creative, innovative thinking. In addition to strong undergraduate majors
and Master’s degree programs in traditional disciplines, CST offers
exceptional learning and research opportunities in a variety of special
programs. Examples include the nationally recognized SMATE program with its
commitment to the high quality preparation of future elementary and secondary
science teachers; an AMSEC research project funded by NSF that seeks to
significantly reduce the cost of solar power; the Vehicle Research Institute
that recently received a substantial federal grant to develop a hybrid bus;
and the award of an NSF ADVANCE Catalyst grant with a focus on the challenges
of women and minorities in the sciences.  Additional information about the

departments and divisions, who will provide leadership in continuing to build
an inclusive climate in the College and who will serve as an advocate for the
College internally and externally.  The Dean will maintain strong connections
with the technological and science-based businesses and other organizations in
the region and play an instrumental role in advancing Western’s comprehensive
campaign.

The Dean of the College of Sciences and Technology is responsible for academic
planning, program development, budget and resource management, program
assessment, faculty appointments, faculty development and evaluation, and
extending the intellectual and creative power of the university beyond the
