Hello to all,
Please pass this along to any students (e.g., graduating seniors) who
might be interested.
Thanks,

*MS Student Opportunity in Volcano Remote Sensing*
***********************************************
Funding is available for students wishing to pursue an MS in Geology
beginning Fall 2011 at Northern Arizona University, in collaboration
with U.S. Geological Survey, Astrogeology Science Center, Flagstaff,
AZ.

This is a NASA-funded project focused on using satellite remote
sensing tools (e.g. MODIS and ASTER) to study and monitor Earth’s
active volcanoes. Specifically, the student will process and analyze
thermal infrared (TIR) data to extract surface temperature and
emissivity information in order to understand variable radiant heat
flux from different types of volcanic thermal features.

Candidates with knowledge of the physical basis of TIR remote sensing,
experience with TIR data, and any programming experience are
preferred, but the student will be instructed in these techniques and
a strong desire to learn about the science, technology, and geologic
applications of TIR remote sensing is fundamental.

Information on the MS degree program and admission to NAU can be found here:
http://www.cefns.nau.edu/Academic/Geology/programs/MS-geology/index.shtml.
Applications are due by Feb 1.
Candidates will then have the opportunity to work for the USGS in the
Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP):
http://www.usgs.gov/ohr/student/benefit/seep.html.
