PUBLICATION ANNOUNCEMENT

The Geological Society of America has
just published Digital Map and Chart no. 6,
entitled: Geologic transect across the northern
Sierra Madre Occidental volcanic field, Chihuahua
and Sonora Mexico. The map is a compilation of 11
field projects completed by graduate students of
the University of Texas at Austin. Together the
projects extend across the SMO volcanic field
between 28° and 28° 30' N. The original maps have
been digitized on a 1:250,000 topographic base,
and the original map units have been combined
into a regional set of nine volcanic units. Both
pdf and ARC-GIS versions of the map are
available. When printed at the desired scale of
1:250,000, the map measures 3' by 5', including
an explanation of units and three inset areas
displayed at 1:80,000. Locations are plotted for
223 samples, for which analytical data have been
obtained, including major- and trace-element
geochemistry, geochronology, and limited
radiogenic isotopic data. In addition to the data
collected as part of the original studies,
expanded trace element analyses and results from
high-precision 40Ar-39Ar geochronology are also
included.

Accompanying the map is a text that
briefly describes the history of UT's study of
the SMO volcanic field, the preparation of the
transect map, and the analytical methods
employed. A general summary of the geologic
features, and tables for all of the analytical
results are also included.
