Dear Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention and invite to submit your
contributions for a broad discussion on geology of volcanoes and
related topics. A short description of the session follows. Full
information about the conference is found at:

http://www.iavcei2008.hi.is

The deadline for abstract submission is April 1st

We look forward to seeing you there.

Please feel free to contact any of the Conveners if you have any questions.

The generation of a geologic map is an essential starting point from
which to base more detailed volcanological research. Despite this,
we have not yet established a common mapping approach, devoted to
identification of the most important features of a volcano. The
structural features of a volcano may have a primary role in its
evolution, controlling the location and modality of volcanic
activity. A variety of structures can be recognised at volcanoes
around the world, as a result of differences in regional (tectonic)
or local (magma, gravity, morphology) stress fields. This session is
open for discussion of volcano mapping methodologies and
establishment of the role of structures in volcano evolution.

This session will focus on:
- Field survey methodologies.
- Presentation of geological maps of volcanoes at different scales.
- Reconstruction of volcanic evolution and identification of main
phases of activity.
- Structural controls on eruptive activity and volcanic collapse.
- Analogue and numerical modelling.
- Use and application of geologic maps (i.e. hazard assessment, etc.).
