************************************************************************** From: Gerardo Aguirre Diaz <ger@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> ************************************************************************** FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS FOR THE SECOND WORKSHOP ON COLLAPSE CALDERAS, QUERÉTARO, MÉXICO OCT. 19-25, 2008 After the success of the First Workshop on Collapse Calderas held at Las Cañadas caldera, Tenerife, Spain on October, 2005, it was decided to continue to meet regularly to discuss the new advances on caldera research. The Second Workshop on Collapse Calderas will take place between October 19-25, 2008 in Mexico. The venue is close to the Pliocene Amealco caldera, about 70 km from Querétaro City, State of Queretaro, in central Mexico (about 200 km to the NW of Mexico City). The purpose of the workshop is to evaluate the present state of knowledge on collapse calderas, focusing on the reconstruction of the evolution of collapse calderas, magma storage, mobilization and eruption processes. Sessions are organized according to different research disciplines: geology, petrology, geophysics, modeling, hazard/risk management, and economic benefits. In order to achieve these objectives we wish to gather a group of scientists interested in discussing these topics. . . We will also carry out a 2-day field trip to the nearby Amealco and Amazcala calderas located in the central Mexican Volcanic Belt. The Workshop is being co-sponsored by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI), the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), and the Grupo Volcanológico de Barcelona-CSIC (GVB-CSIC). Call for papers, deadline and cost: We encourage the community working on calderas to submit an extended abstract to the workshop by using the web link indicated below, or send an E-mail to either of the conveners. The deadline for abstract submission is May 15, 2008. Costs are around US$900, including hotel and meals during the workshop, fieldtrips, and transportation to and from Querétaro City to the workshop's venue. The workshop is limited to 100 participants. Graduate students are welcome to attend and limited financial assistance will be available. Please contact us at: Web page: http://www.gvb-csic.es/CCW.htm for detailed information.
