********************************************************************* From: Jorge Clavero <jclavero@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> ********************************************************************* Dear colleagues We would like to draw your attention and invite you to submit contributions to the session 4-e "Volcano hazard mapping: present and future challenges" at the next IAVCEI General Assembly "Understanding volcanoes", to be held in Iceland in August. Please remember that the deadline for abstract submission is April 1st, and visit the IAVCEI 2008 GA (www.earthice.hi.is/page/I08-intro) to check for abstract instructions and other important information. Looking forward to see you in Iceland! Session: Volcano hazard Maps are probably the oldest and most common way used by scientists to communicate volcanic hazards to authorities and local people. In recent years new techniques and tools have been incorporated for generating volcano hazard maps, in order to improve their quality and, especially, to improve the way they are received and understood by land-use planners, decision-makers and the whole community living around active volcanoes. Both static and dynamic maps, for prevention and crisis management, respectively, are currently being produced worldwide, using different techniques, field-based and numerical modelling-based, as well as different graphic components, in order to better suit local perspectives on how to approach volcano hazard communication. Recent international initiatives have tried to standardize some of the key issues that should be addressed while generating volcano hazard maps. This session focuses on bringing together people working on volcano hazard mapping, at all stages of the process, for discussing these different techniques and approaches for generating and socializing volcano hazard maps. This session is looking for contributions addressing: - Examples of volcano hazard maps - Research methodologies applied to volcano hazard mapping - Numerical or analogue modelling applied to volcano hazard maps - Static and dynamic volcano hazard maps - Examples on applications of volcano hazard maps for land-use planning and emergency planning - Examples on the process of socializing volcano hazard maps Conveners: J.
