**************************************************************************** Volcano Systems Science Field Course in New Zealand: From Source to Surface From: Darren Gravley <d.gravley@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> **************************************************************************** Members of the Volcanology Group at The University of Auckland (Prof. Colin Wilson, A/Prof. Ian Smith, Dr Darren Gravley, Dr Phil Shane and Dr Jan Lindsay) will be leading a 14-day field course in the North Island of New Zealand from April 7th to the 20th 2008. The course is designed for motivated postgraduate students involved in volcanic and magmatic research. A brief description is provided below. For a course application email Dr Darren Gravley (d.gravley@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx). The North Island of New Zealand houses one of the most volcanically active regions on Earth. Much of the architecture of the North Island reflects subduction zone processes with episodic accelerated periods of arc magmatism and volcanism. Volcanism ranges from quiet basaltic lava activity from monogenetic volcanoes through stratovolcano eruptions to huge silicic caldera-forming eruptions. On this 14-day course we will investigate the thermal (magmatic) evolution of the crust and surface volcanism in Northland, Auckland and the central North Island. Field excursions will be complemented by a series of evening lectures that will be focused around the lecturer's field and laboratory-based studies. Our goal is to provide students with a skill base of field-focused techniques that will enable them to understand the fundamental causes and timescales of magma genesis and volcanic activity, decipher eruptive processes, and interpret mechanisms of transport and deposition of volcanic products. Field excursions will include the world heritage Tongariro National Park, Mt. Tarawera, and the White Island volcano marine reserve and Rangitoto Island. ============================================================== To unsubscribe from the volcano list, send the message: signoff volcano to: listserv@xxxxxxx, or write to: volcano-request@xxxxxxxx To contribute to the volcano list, send your message to: volcano@xxxxxxxx Please do not send attachments. ==============================================================
