Prince of Wales Landscape Level Analysis Project Subsistence Hearings

THORNE BAY, Alaska, July 30, 2018 – The Tongass National Forest will hold Public Hearings to accept subsistence testimony regarding the Prince of Wales Landscape Level Analysis (POW LLA) Project. These subsistence hearings are intended to meet subsistence evaluation requirements outlined in Section 810, Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA). These subsistence hearings are designed to receive testimony from individuals, agencies, and organizations on the activities proposed in the POW LLA Project Area located on Prince of Wales Island and surrounding islands and how the proposed activities may potentially affect users of subsistence resources within the project area. Notices of the hearings will be posted in Kasaan, Klawock, and Naukati two weeks prior to the hearing dates. Subsistence Hearings for the POW LLA Project will be held in four communities on Prince of Wales Island, as follows:

September 6, 2018 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Community Hall in Point Baker, Alaska.

October 9, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Tribal Community Hall in Kasaan, Alaska.

October 10, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Klawock Vocational & Technical Center in Klawock, Alaska.

October 11, 2018 from 5:00 to 7 p.m. at the Naukati School in Naukati, Alaska.

To view the POW LLA Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) or sign up for electronic notifications, please visit the project web page at: http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/tongass/powlla. Project information, updates, meeting notices, and documents will be provided there throughout the planning and analysis process. The POW LLA Final EIS is planned to be completed and available in October 2018.

The purpose of the POW LLA Project is to improve forest ecosystem health on Craig and Thorne Bay Ranger Districts, help support community resiliency, and provide economic development through an integrated approach to meet multiple resource objectives. The Forest Service used input from local youth; an independently-formed, broadly-based collaborative group (Prince of Wales Landscape Assessment Team); the tribes; and the general public to identify and address concerns in development of the POW LLA Project’s alternatives and the effects being analyzed in the FEIS.
