Helm Bay and Helm Creek cabins closed because of bear damage
KETCHIKAN, Alaska, May. 23, 2017
– Helm Bay and Helm Creek cabins on the Tongass National Forest, Ketchikan-Misty Fiords Ranger District are closed until June 22, 2017 because of bear damage.
The cabins are located in the southeast corner of the Cleveland Peninsula on the West Behm Canal. Helm Bay cabin is located on the west shore of Helm Bay behind Forss Island. Helm Creek Cabin is located on the
east shore of Helm Bay near the mouth of Helm Creek.
A bear broken into and disturbed both cabins and the cabin’s outhouses. Food conditioned bears can pose a serious threat to the health and safety of visitors. This temporary closure has been instituted in order
to protect the safety of forest visitors, and to access the bear activity in the area.
The Tongass National Forest
maintains over 150 saltwater to alpine cabins and shelters across Southeast Alaska.
