Snake Ridge Fire May 24 update
Closure order in effect for immediate area of the fire Happy Jack, Ariz., May 24, 2017, For Immediate Release —
A closure order is now in effect for the area of the lightning-caused Snake Ridge Fire, which fire personnel are managing above the Mogollon Rim.
The area, approximately nine miles north of Clints Well, Ariz. (north of West Clear Creek) and west of Lake Mary Road (FH 3), is closed to protect public safety. This closure order affects certain areas and roads on the Mogollon Rim Ranger District in the Coconino
National Forest and begins at the junction of Forest Road (FR) 214 and FR 81A. The boundary extends west and south on FR 81A to the FR 9398L where the boundary extends to the east to FR 755. On the 755 the closure area travels south to FR 679 and then east
then north to FR 81E. The 81E is followed to the north to the FR 81B and continues northwest to FR 83. The boundary then extends north and connects to FR83A and proceeds north back to FR 214.
The wildfire is burning at low to moderate intensity due to current conditions, providing the opportunity to burn off dead wood and other fuels that would increase the intensity
of a severe wildfire later in the season, return nutrients to the soil, and restore wildlife habitats.
The Snake Ridge Fire, as with any wildfire, does not have a planned end date, but firefighters have determined an approximate 55,000-acre planning area within which the fire may
run its natural course. However, this does not mean the fire will move across all 55,000 acres, as specific edges of the fire will be suppressed to protect certain values such as public safety, private property, cultural sites, major transmission lines, trailheads,
dispersed camping sites and more.
The wildfire will continue to increase from its current size and is predicted to move across approximately 15,000 acres of land inside the determined planning area over the next
two weeks as firefighters help direct where and how the fire moves through the landscape.

as necessary, and signs will be placed in areas of closures/restrictions to notify the public. Smoke Impacts: Smoke will be
visible in the area from Lake Mary Road, state Routes 87 and 260, as well as Interstate 17. Smoke has impacted Verde Valley and Sedona but is expected to lighten throughout the rest of the day. Due to burnout operations today, Holbrook may experience smoke
impacts as well.
