50 CFR Part 100.10 and .19

The North Fork Katlian River Zone on Baranof Island in Unit 4 is closed to mountain goat harvest

The Sitka District Ranger, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, is taking action to close the North Fork Katlian River zone to the harvest of mountain goats. The closure will be effective at 11:59 p.m., Friday August 29, 2014 and will remain in effect through the remainder of the 2014 season which ends December 31, 2014. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has issued a closure in the same zone, effective August 29, 2014 through the close of the season on December 31, 2014.

The maximum harvest objective for the North Fork Katlian zone was set at four male goats or one female goat. As of August 26, 2014, two male and one female goat have been harvested. Continued mountain goat harvest, especially females, in this area would be detrimental to the long term conservation of the mountain goat population in Unit 4.

The remainder of Baranof Island will remain open for goat hunting unless closed by past or future special action.

A map and description of the closed area is available from the Sitka Ranger District Office and the Sitka area office of ADF&G.
