Rainforest Festival

PETERSBURG, Alaska–The annual Rainforest Festival is September 4 to 7, 2014. The festival is a four-day celebration of the natural and cultural resources around Petersburg, Alaska. The goal is to bring participants closer to the natural world through education, exploration, and the arts.

USDA Forest Service Petersburg Ranger District employees are coordinating several children’s activities. Public Services Group Leader Linda Slaght and USFS Entomologist Elizabeth Graham from Juneau will present a dragonfly event at the Nature Boardwalk on Friday. Fisheries Biological Technician Eric Castro hosts fish and fern t-shirts printing at Sandy Beach Shelter 2 on Sunday.

A 2014 Tongass National Forest diversity grant contributed in bringing the University of Alaska Geophysical Institute Portable Planetarium and two astronomy educators to the festival. The cultural part of the program will include a view of the night sky with information about Alaskan cultures including the Tlingit and Haida legends of the stars. Learning more about one of the most ancient sciences will help viewers connect the present with the past. Planetarium viewings are at St. Catherine's Norma Tenfjord Hall (Dolphin and 3rd St) at scheduled times on Saturday.

Chugach National Forest Ecologist Kate Mohatt will speak about Alaska fungi at the Ruth Sandvik Room at Petersburg Public Library and mushroom identification at Sandy Beach Park on Saturday.

In conjunction with the festival, celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act by viewing a wilderness film. The Meaning of Wild is showing at Petersburg High School Wright Auditorium on Thursday evening, or bring your lunch to the Public Library Community Room on Friday, September 5 for a re-showing. The short film, developed by the Sitka Conservation Society, illustrates the beauty and diversity of Tongass National Forest Wilderness Areas.
