Kosciusko Vegetation Management and Watershed Improvement Project

THORNE BAY, Alaska–The U.S. Forest Service has begun the public involvement process for the Kosciusko Vegetation Management and Watershed Improvement Project, located on Kosciusko Island, northwest of Prince of Wales Island. This project is designed to 1) help move the Forest forward in transitioning to young-growth management while enhancing wildlife habitat, improving riparian areas, and enhancing the areas around high-vulnerability karst; 2) supply a small component of old growth to meet the needs of the local community; 3) restore riparian management areas and improve fish habitat; 4) manage water flow and blockages to improve karst hydrologic systems; and 5) treat invasive plant infestations.

The scoping letter, which describes the proposal, project area, and purpose and need is available on the project website (http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/R10/Tongass/Kosciusko [case sensitive]). Those wishing to be on the mailing list for the project are encouraged to sign up for the project’s email list by visiting the website and clicking the Subscribe to Email Updates link.

The public can also learn about and provide written input on these proposals at three open houses, which will be held in conjunction with subsistence hearings:
