Resource Benefits Achieved on Two Fires
TUSAYAN, AZ. – The Cooper and Skinner Fires on the Kaibab National Forest have reached their planning area boundaries achieving the resource benefit goals fire managers had set for them. These lightning ignited fires have burned on the Kaibab National Forest over the past several weeks. The Cooper Fire located northwest of Jacob Lake and the Skinner Fire located east of Tusayan are now contained within each fire’s designated planning area. Over the past several days, fire crews ignited the perimeters, removing fuels thus prevent further spread.
With the return of monsoon rains, precipitation was received both on North Kaibab and in Tusayan Sunday. Two remaining lightning fires on the Kaibab National Forest continue to burn with low intensity and limited fire spread.
South Kaibab Zone:
Mud Fire – 62 acre lightning fire that began July 29, continues to burn smoldering and creeping in ponderosa pine litter with 3 to 6 inch flame lengths and one foot flame lengths in larger diameter down logs. This fire is also being managed for multiple resource benefits such as maintaining fire in a fire-adapted ecosystem to reduce down woody fuel accumulation and stand density.
North Zone Fires:
Castle Fire – 180 acres, located 1 mile East of Big Springs Lookout received precipitation today and no growth in fire size. Fire crews completed burnout along the south and west perimeter of the fire Saturday.
Cooperative interagency fire personnel assisting with these fires include: National Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Arizona DPS, ADOT and Tusayan Fire District.
