Natural Caused Fires Assist Fire Managers

TUSAYAN, AZ. – Fire managers for both the North and South Kaibab Fire Zones are pleased with burning results provided by lightning caused fires started in late July. With mild weather conditions and increased fuel moisture, lightning caused fires have burned with lower intensity, assisting fire managers to meet resource objectives reducing forest fuel accumulation. Fire activity is expected to continue over the next several days, although a decrease in fire spread and smoke is anticipated.

South Kaibab Zone:

Mud Fire – 10 acres, located Southeast of Summit Mountain and south of Williams. This is a low intensity fire spreading to the south and upslope in Ponderosa pine/oak brush vegetation. The fire is active in 35% of the perimeter with 3-6” flame lengths.

Skinner Fire - 1185 acres, located 5 miles East of Tusayan increased with moderate fire growth within the designated planning area. This fire is burning in Ponderosa Pine and oak brush vegetation within several older burns.

10X Prescribed Fire – 20 acres of low intensity fire was ignited today by the Tusayan Fire District adjacent to the Skinner Fire. In cooperation with the Forest, an additional 130 acres of prescribed burning is expected to take place over the next several days.

North Zone Fires:

Cooper Fire – 739 acres, located 3 miles Northwest of Jacob Lake and North of 89A. The fire perimeter was secured Thursday evening. Fire activity was confined within the interior and firefighters patrolled to secure the fire edge. Fire managers are feeling good about the results of this fire.

Castle Fire – 180 acres, located 1 mile East of Big Springs Lookout. The fire burned with moderate intensity today in the Ponderosa Pine understory. Burnout was accomplished along the south and west boundary of the fire.

Cooperative interagency fire personnel assisting with these fires include: National Forest Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Arizona DPS, ADOT and Tusayan Fire District.
