Good morning--

Skinner Complex Update

TUSAYAN, Ariz. – Tusayan Ranger District officials report the Skinner Complex has reached approximately 2,470 acres. The Complex is comprised of the Armstrong Fire (2,314 acres) and the Skinner Fire (156 acres). Crews are using these lightning-caused fires to accomplish many resource objectives on the forest such as returning fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem and improving wildlife habitat.

The Skinner Fire is eight miles southeast of Tusayan. Today, crews will be working along Forest Road 304 on the northwestern side of the management area designated for the fire. About 20 personnel are on the incident.

One engine is monitoring the Armstrong Fire, 18 miles southeast of Tusayan. Managers say this fire has almost reached its maximum growth and smoke will begin to subside.

The Skinner Complex is in Game Management Unit 9. There are no closures with these fires; however, if you are planning to visit or camp in this area, be aware of the potential for activity to increase. Please slow down and watch for crews and equipment. If you stop to look at the fires, ensure you are in a location where other traffic can pass safely.

The general forecast shows another warm day for northern Arizona. A chance of thunderstorms returns to the area early next week.

Prevailing southwest winds have been transporting smoke to the northeast. Smoke will be visible from areas across the district and along portions of Highway 64 and Highway 180 and may settle in Coconino Wash and Red Horse Wash overnight.
