Skinner Complex Update

TUSAYAN, Ariz. – The Skinner Complex on the Tusayan Ranger District has grown to approximately 2,200 acres. The Complex is comprised of the Armstrong Fire (2,194 acres) and the Skinner Fire (6 acres). The lightning-caused fires are being managed for resource objectives.

Today, approximately six people will be working on the Armstrong Fire, 18 miles southeast of Tusayan. They will focus their attention on the northern boundary of the management area and finish some work along Forest Road 320. After today, activity will begin to decrease. There will be smoke impacts along the road from time to time. If you are traveling in this area, please slow down and watch for crews and personnel.

Meanwhile on the Skinner Fire, eight miles southeast of Tusayan near Skinner Ridge, crews will continue their work preparing fire sensitive sites for potential fire spread. The fire is burning within an 8,000-acre designated boundary. Approximately 20 personnel are working on the Skinner.

Mark Nabel is the Resource Advisor on the Skinner Complex. Nabel says, “Crews are meeting many resource and protection objectives with these fires such as returning fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem, improving wildlife habitat, and protecting private property and cultural resources. As a result, the possibility of a severe wildfire has been reduced on about 2,200 additional acres of the forest.”

These fires are burning within Game Management Unit 9. If you are planning to visit or camp in this area, please be aware of the potential for fire activity to increase.

The general forecast calls for fair ventilation today. Prevailing southwest winds have been transporting smoke to the northeast.  Smoke from the Skinner Complex will be visible from areas across the district and along portions of Highway 64 and Highway 180. Smoke may settle in Coconino Wash and Red Horse Wash overnight.
