Skinner Complex Update

TUSAYAN, Ariz. – Tusayan Ranger District officials report the Skinner Complex has grown to  approximately 3,052 acres. The Complex is comprised of the Armstrong Fire (2,194 acres) and the Skinner Fire (858 acres).

The fires are in Game Management Unit 9 and could keep growing for the next few weeks, depending on the weather. The lightning-caused fires are being managed to improve forest health, enhance wildlife habitat and reduce the potential for severe wildfire occurrence.

The Skinner Fire is eight miles southeast of Tusayan. Today, approximately 25 personnel will continue working with the fire along Forest Roads 343 and 322 on the northeastern side of the designated management area.

One engine is monitoring the Armstrong Fire, 18 miles southeast of Tusayan. Managers say this fire continues to burn slowly, mostly within the interior. They expect smoke to decrease daily.

There are no closures on these fires; however, if you are planning to visit or camp in this area, be aware of the potential for activity to increase. Please slow down and watch for crews and equipment. If you stop to look at the fires, ensure you are in a location where other traffic can pass safely.

The general forecast shows another warm day for northern Arizona. A chance of thunderstorms returns to the area early this week. Prevailing southwest winds have been transporting smoke to the northeast. Smoke may be present in various areas across the district and along portions of Highway 64.
