Skinner Complex Update

TUSAYAN, Ariz. – The Skinner Complex is approximately 3,525 acres. The Complex is comprised of the Armstrong Fire (2,400 acres) and the Skinner Fire (1125 acres).

Crews continue to use these fires to achieve several resource objectives such as returning fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem, improving wildlife habitat and reducing the potential for severe wildfire occurrence.

The Skinner Fire is eight miles southeast of Tusayan. Today, approximately 15 personnel will continue management ignitions along Forest Roads 302 and 304 to meet resource objectives and keep the fire within the designated boundary.

One engine is monitoring and patrolling the Armstrong Fire, 18 miles southeast of Tusayan. Managers say this fire continues to burn slowly and smoke is decreasing daily.

Toby Cook, Incident Commander Trainee says, “While these fires are located within Game Management Unit 9, only some portions of the unit are affected by fire activity. Much of the area is open for camping and hunting.” Cook adds, “Concerning wildlife habitat, positive results from these fires will be readily apparent as the rain returns to northern Arizona and new vegetation starts to grow.”

There are no closures on these fires; however, if you are planning to visit or camp in this area, be aware of the potential for activity to increase. Please slow down and watch for crews and equipment.

Smoke may be present in various areas across the district, in Tusayan, and along portions of Highway 64. Yesterday, there were smoke impacts on Highway 64 just south of Tusayan.

There is a fair chance of thunderstorms this week. Precipitation will likely slow fire activity and operations.
