Update on Tusayan Ranger District Fires
TUSAYAN, Ariz. – The National Weather Service has forecasted a return of monsoon activity and a chance of showers this week for northern Arizona. Over the weekend, fire crews continued managing two lightning-caused fires on the Tusayan Ranger District with these predicted changes in mind.
The Parallel Fire and the Woodbridge Fire are being managed to improve forest health, reduce accumulated forest debris, and return fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem. In order to meet these objectives, crews have introduced fire as necessary to prevent high intensity fire spread within the defined management areas.
The Parallel Fire started July 4, nine miles southeast of Tusayan near Red Butte. It has grown to 1,616 acres. Sunday, crews worked to secure the northeast half of the management area for the incident. Approximately 44 personnel are assigned including three engines, one Type 2 crew and several fire effects monitors.
The Woodbridge Fire started July
12, about 18 miles east of Tusayan on the Coconino Rim. It is 550 acres.
A helicopter flight occurred Sunday to help plan for possible aerial ignitions
Monday, weather dependent. About 20 personnel are assigned to the Woodbridge
including two engines and the Kaibab fuels crew.
The Red Butte fire lookout reported
there were no significant smoke impacts from the fires Monday morning;
however, there is the potential for increased smoke east of Tusayan early
this week as operations continue.
