Portage Valley BioBlitz
24 hours AND Counting

Saturday July 23 at noon, marks the beginning of the first BioBlitz in southcentral Alaska. The 24-hour event takes place in Portage Valley in the Chugach Children’s Forest and joins a network of BioBlitz’s that happen all over the country. A blend of science and celebration the 24 hour sampling of flora and fauna studies the biodiversity of Portage Valley through five habitats.

Biologists and naturalists will team up with citizen scientists (that’s you) to discover and count the abundant mammal, bird, fish, plant and invertebrate life that populates Portage Valley. In addition to flora and fauna counts; you can take part in identification walks, watch bird presentations, head out on an iceworm safari, i.d. some animal tracks and scat, and lots more.  All events are free, campsites and food are not provided, but camping can be reserved at www.recreation.gov and the Portage Valley Café and Gallery is open from 9:00am to 7:00pm.

This year’s BioBlitz is one of the Chugach National Forest’s signature events celebrating the 2011 International Year of Forests. BioBlitz is brought to you in partnership with the Chugach National Forest, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center, and Alaska Geographic. Check out the full schedule at chugachbioblitz2011.wordpress.com or call (907) 743-9500 for more information.
