Update on Kaibab National Forest Fires
WILLIAMS, Ariz. – Fire managers expect an increase in activity on three fires across the Kaibab National Forest through the rest of the week. The National Weather Service reports monsoon activity will lessen over northern Arizona bringing warmer and drier conditions.
Two of the three fires are on the Tusayan Ranger District, the Parallel Fire (3 acres) nine miles southeast of Tusayan and the Woodbridge Fire (35 acres) 18 miles east of Tusayan on the Coconino Rim. Crews are managing these fires to improve forest health, reduce accumulated forest debris, and enhance wildlife habitat.
The Beale Fire (10 acres) is on the Williams Ranger District about 16 miles northeast of Williams and southwest of Kendrick Mountain. Fire managers are presenting a plan to approving officials Wednesday to manage this fire for resource objectives.
Approximately, 40 personnel including the Kaibab fuels crew, three fire effects monitors, and several engines are working on the incidents. Today, operations on the Parallel Fire will include creating firebreaks within the management area of the incident to slow anticipated fire spread. On the Woodbridge Fire, personnel will monitor and document fire activity.
As the fires gain momentum, more smoke will be noticeable, especially near the Parallel and Beale fires. Prevailing southwest winds will transport smoke to the northeast. If you are traveling near the fires, please be cautious of personnel and equipment working in the area.
