Prescribed burns planned:
Anderson Mesa today and Saturday, Mountainaire on Monday

Flagstaff, AZ – Fire managers are still planning a prescribed burn on Anderson Mesa about 20 miles southeast of Flagstaff today and perhaps tomorrow. Steady south to southwest winds about 15 mph and sunny, dry skies are needed to push fire through 2,000 acres of grassland south of Ashurst Lake.

Since the fuels on this burn are so fine, they should consume quickly. Smoke will be noticeable south of Flagstaff and will disperse toward the north once ignition is complete. Some light residual smoke may be noticeable along Lake Mary Road/Forest Highway 3 and Mormon Lake Village overnight.

Monday, November 1:
Mountainaire, 1000 acres south of Lake Mary Road. Smoke may linger along Lake Mary Road in the Heckethorne neighborhood.

The remainder of next week, crews may also ignite on the following projects:
        Woody Ridge, southwest of Flagstaff
        East Side, east of Flagstaff
        Oak Creek Canyon pile burns
        Apache Maid/Stoneman Lake area
APS Project north of Hwy 87 and the Blue Ridge Ranger Station
Upper Beaver Creek Project near junction of Stoneman Lake Road and Forest Highway 3/ Lake Mary Road.
Limestone Flats, north of Mogollon Rim near Forest Road 137 and Limestone Ranch.

Fire managers work hard to address the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires near homes and neighborhoods while minimizing smoke impacts to communities. The Coconino National Forest coordinate prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the chances of multiple prescribed fire projects impacting one area.

All prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).
