Prescribed burn planned on Anderson Mesa Thursday and Friday

Flagstaff, AZ – Fire managers are planning to conduct a prescribed burn on Anderson Mesa southeast of Flagstaff tomorrow and Friday. Conditions should be ideal to burn the grasses on approximately 2,000 acres south of Ashurst Lake.

Since the fuels on this burn are so fine, they should consume quickly. During ignition, smoke will be noticeable south of Flagstaff and will disperse toward the north. It will dissipate quickly once ignition is complete. Some light residual smoke may be noticeable along Lake Mary Road and in Mormon Lake Village overnight.

Crews may also ignite several piles on 5 acres north of Clint’s Well and west of Forest Highway 3 (Lake Mary Rd) near Mahan Park. Smoke will be noticeable from FH3 during ignition. Residual smoke will be minimal.

Fire managers work hard to address the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires near homes and neighborhoods while minimizing smoke impacts to communities. The Coconino National Forest coordinate prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the chances of multiple prescribed fire projects impacting one area.

All prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).
