SOUTHWESTERN-NEWS-RELEASE: Coconino National Forest Smoke Information

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

This information is being provided by the Coconino National Forest on behalf of the Flagstaff Fire Department and Camp Navajo. Ignition occured earlier this afternoon on the first section of this project, and will continue tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov 3.

Camp Navajo staff and the Flagstaff Fire Department are working together to conduct a 330-acre controlled burn on the southwest side of Volunteer Mountain.  If conditions on-site meet criteria, the burn will occur within the next several weeks.

The project will consist of a broadcast burn to reduce accumulated needles and other downed forest debris, thereby reducing the future threat of destructive wildfire.  Smoke will be visible during and shortly after the burn, but burning will be conducted so as to minimize any smoke impacts to residents, visitors, and businesses in the area.

Other area fire agencies will be assisting: These may include the Ponderosa, Sherwood Forest, Summit, Highlands, and Pinewood Fire Districts, the AZ State Forestry Division, the US Forest Service, and others.
