Prescribed burn plans for Thursday

Fuel moistures and conditions are shaping-up for several prescribed fire projects tomorrow.

Eastside Project – 230 acres located on Campbell Mesa, between Old Walnut Canyon Road and I-40. Smoke will be noticeable from East Flagstaff and will rise and disperse to the east with the forecast winds. Some light smoke may impact I-40 and the immediate area.
Fort Valley Project – 5 acres north of Flagstaff off Hwy 180 in the Fort Valley Experimental Forest. This is a research block that is burned every four years, with minimal accumulated fuel. Smoke will be very light and will disperse to the east. Some residual smoke may be noticeable on Hwy 180 and in the Baderville area, but it should be very light.
Upper Beaver Creek Project – 75 acres west of Lake Mary Road (Forest Highway 3) near Stoneman Lake Road. Smoke is expected to move to the west with the winds predicted for the area. Some light smoke may temporarily impact FH3.

Prescribed fire activity continues to be dependent on personnel availability, weather – including ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).

Fire managers work hard to address the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires near homes and neighborhoods while minimizing smoke impacts to communities. The Coconino National Forest coordinate prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the chances of multiple prescribed fire projects impacting one area.
