Tentative prescribed fire plans for the week of Oct 18

Flagstaff, AZ – The rain in the forecast will play a large role in next week’s prescribed fire plans on the Coconino National Forest. Fuels could be wet enough for prescribed pile burns. If predicted rain isn’t substantial and fuels become dry enough, fire managers may consider broadcast burning.

All prescribed fire activity is dependent on weather – including ventilation conditions, personnel availability, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).

Crews are tentatively planning pile burns behind Mountainaire and in Oak Creek Canyon for Monday Oct 18, depending on the amount of precipitation the areas receive.

In addition to the Mountainaire and Oak Creek Canyon projects, crews may conduct burns in the following projects next week:
Upper Beaver Creek Project near the junction of Stoneman Lake Road and Lake Mary Road (Forest Highway 3)
Kachina Project south of Kachina Village between Hwy 89A and I-17
Woody Project southwest of Flagstaff in the general area around Woody Mountain Road (Forest Road 231)

Fire managers work hard to address the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires near homes and neighborhoods while minimizing smoke impacts to communities. The Coconino National Forest coordinate prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the chances of multiple prescribed fire projects impacting one area.
