Several prescribed fires planned this week

Flagstaff, AZ –Coconino National Forest fire specialists are planning several prescribed fire projects this week, given advantageous weather and wind conditions. Fire managers coordinate prescribed fire plans with the other partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the smoke of multiple prescribed fire projects impacting one area.

All prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).

For Tomorrow and Thursday:
Oak Creek Canyon Project will include 20 acres of slash piles south of Pine Flat Campground.  Although smoke is expected to disperse fairly quickly, local residents and visitors can expect temporary smoke impacts along Highway 89A.  Prescribed fire signs will be posted along the highway to alert drivers during this activity.

Upper Beaver Creek Project will include 150-250/day acres west of Forest Highway 3 (Lake Mary Road) between Stoneman Lake Road (FR 213) and Happy Jack. Expect smoke impacts to Stoneman Lake and Verde Valley. Signs will also be posted along Forest Highway 3 to alert drivers to smoke.
