Weekend Festival Celebrates the Alaskan Rainforest

Petersburg, AK— The 3rd annual Tongass Rainforest Festival will be held in Petersburg this Thursday, September 9th through Sunday, September 12th.

The Tongass Rainforest Festival is a non-profit event founded by members of the Petersburg community with the goal of bringing participants closer to the natural world through education, exploration and the arts.

“There is something for everyone,” said Charley Streuli, Tongass National Forest Staff Officer for Fire, Ecology and Forest Management. “The festival is a great opportunity for families and friends to get together and have a fun time learning more about the natural environment that we enjoy every day on the Tongass.”

Featured events include nature walks for kids and adults, workshops with the renowned wildlife photographer Amy Gulick, and an art show by local artists at the Clausen Memorial Museum. A community potluck, baking contest, and live music will be held on Saturday night from 6pm to 9pm at ANB/ANS Hall.

“This annual festival brings people closer to the beauty, mystery and science of the Tongass rainforest,” said Karen Dillman, Tongass National Forest ecologist and event co-founder. “It would not be a success without the different partners and individuals who dedicate their time and energy to make it happen.”

A detailed schedule of events can be found online at http://tongassrainforestfestival.org.  For more information, call (907) 772-3381.
